Updates on the Navajo Immersion school at Fort Defiance

During my undergraduate at ASU, I was fortunate enough to go back to the elementary school I went to as a student teacher. I got to work with my 3rd grade teacher. It was an amazing experience. The children are so talented. I truly plan to go back and help the school succeed.
See the article posted at the bottom of my page that tells about the current Immersion School today.
The article was written by Levi J. Long from the Navajo Times.
What are the changes and accomplishments that the program has went through?

I still need to find some past classmates....

I was in the Navajo Immersion Program at Fort Defiance Elementary up to 5th grade. Since then, some of my classmates continued with me at the same school district. Others moved away and went to different schools.

I have had a great time finding past participants. I've talked to moms and old teachers. It's been exciting. I still need help contacting some students.

If you were a 1986 Navajo Immersion student at Fort Defiance Elementary, please contact me.

Research Project Design

I am going to contact 17 Navajo Immersion Program participants and send them a letter explaining my research goals along with a survey questionnaire. The letter and survey will be sent via e-mail. In addition I will ask if participants are interested in doing an interview. If so, I will contact them and decide on a meeting time to do the interview. I am planning to interview 5 participants who have completed the survey. I plan to collect narrative stories on their experiences and find out how they felt about their participation in the Navajo Immersion Program.
Method of data collection: Qualitative data collection
Survey questionnaire (to be sent by e-mail or mail) & interview

Project Significance:

Outcomes?
I hope that through my study, I will demonstrate the need for programs that help language revitalization. The research is focused on the importance of learning the Navajo language in an educational setting. I would like to share how one school on the Navajo reservation is working to ensure the existence of their Navajo Language. More specifically, the personal narratives of the Fort Defiance Navajo Immersion Program students will demonstrate the progress and effectiveness of the school from a student’s viewpoint.
I am all about language revitalization. I want to ensure the existence of my Dine langauge. This project aim to work towards that goal.

My research project

Thank you for visiting my blog. I would like to begin by explaining how I came about my research topic. The Immersion program that I was a personal participant of has always been very important to me. I was reading an article by Holm & Arviso which mentioned the first Navajo Immersion students of 1986. The article mentioned there were no direct information on the first group that went through the Immersion program.
Excitedly, I thought "I was apart of that group." I then began to ponder over the idea of finding and contacting the first cohort Immersion group and get their views, thoughts and perspectives about learning the Navajo language and the influences the program has had on their lives. So, I began my journey.
Through the study; I would like to find out how their participation in the program and their learning through the Navajo language has impacted or has had direct effect upon their lives. More importantly, what are their overall viewpoints on the continuation of the Dine Bizaad (Navajo language)?
It is going to be an exciting journey.
